COVER ARTWORK: What Is Truth. Christ And Pilate, Nikolai Ge, 1890

COVER ARTWORK: What Is Truth. Christ And Pilate, Nikolai Ge, 1890

Prelude

On the cross love is shown
Through Christ, only Christ
Debt is paid, sin atoned
Through Christ, only Christ
Pilate mocked, “What is truth?”
As the nails pierced Him through
See the veil torn in two
Through Christ, only Christ

- Erik Dewar, “Only Christ”

Call to Worship

LEADER: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

PEOPLE: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Hymn of Rejoicing: How Great Thou Art

Stuart Hine ©1949 and 1953 Stuart Hine Trust, CCLI #247013

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy pow’r thru’out the universe displayed

REFRAIN:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze (REFRAIN)

And when I think that God His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin (REFRAIN)

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, “My God how great Thou art!” (REFRAIN)

Pastoral Prayer

THIS WEEK’S PRAYER EMPHASIS:
Prayer for wisdom for TCPC leadership as Elders & Deacons meet this week.

The Lord’s Prayer

UNISON: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Baptism

9:00 - Mabel Davis Jackson, daughter of Nicholas & Kristen

Declaration to Our Covenant Children (from the Church of Scotland)

UNISON: For you Jesus Christ came into the world. For you He lived and showed God’s love. For you He suffered the darkness of Calvary. For you He triumphed over death and rose to new life. For you He reigns at God’s right hand. All this He did for you, Mabel, though you do not know it yet.

RENEW

Receive the grace of God

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:4-7

Surely he has borne our griefs
      and carried our sorrows;
   yet we esteemed him stricken,
      smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
      he was crushed for our iniquities;
   upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
      and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
      we have turned—every one—to his own way;
   and the LORD has laid on him
      the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
      yet he opened not his mouth;
   like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
      and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
      so he opened not his mouth.

All men are like grass, their glory like flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of the Lord stands forever.

Confession of God’s People (from Valley of Vision)

UNISON: God of all Grace, I have no robe of righteousness to bring to cover my sins, and no skill to weave my own.  But you have clothed me with the Savior’s robe, and decked me with the jewels of His righteousness. Every morning let me wear it, every evening return in it, go out to the day’s work in it, be wound in death in it, stand before the great throne of judgment in it, and enter glory in it shining as the sun. Grant me to never lose sight of the exceeding wickedness of sin, the exceeding righteousness of salvation, the exceeding glory of Christ, the exceeding beauty of holiness, and the exceeding wonder of grace.

- Silent Prayers of Confession -

Repentance of God’s People

LEADER: Do you renounce your sinful thoughts, words, and deeds that offend God, harm others, and ruin creation?

PEOPLE: We do.

LEADER: Do you renounce the ways and idols of this fallen world that oppose God’s Kingdom and glory

PEOPLE: We do.

LEADER: Do you renounce Satan and all spiritual force of darkness that rebel against the one true God?

PEOPLE: We do.

Assurance of God’s Pardon from 2 Corinthians 5

LEADER: God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Hymn of Renewal: When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

Isaac Watts | Lowell Mason ©Public Domain

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God.
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

RESPOND

Embrace the call of God

Confession of Faith (from Westminster Catechism)

LEADER: What is the chief end of man?

PEOPLE: The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

LEADER: What is God?

PEOPLE: God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

LEADER: Are there more Gods than one?

PEOPLE: There is but only one, the living and true God.

LEADER: How many persons are there in the Godhead?

PEOPLE: There are three persons in the Godhead; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.

Doxology

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Scripture Reading: Mark 14:53-65

53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. 65 And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.

LEADER: The Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

Sermon by Rev. Robert Cunningham, Senior Minister

“Jesus Arraigned”

Sacrament of Holy Communion

MINISTER: Let us together proclaim the hope of the Church:

PEOPLE: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ shall come again!

MINISTER: I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper, he took the cup saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Hymn of Response: The Power Of The Cross

Keith Getty | Stuart Townend © 2005 Thankyou Music

Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day
Christ on the road to Calvary
Tried by sinful men torn and beaten then
Nailed to a cross of wood

REFRAIN:
This the pow’r of the cross
Christ became sin for us
Took the blame bore the wrath
We stand forgiven at the cross

Oh to see the pain written on Your face
Bearing the awesome weight of sin
Ev’ry bitter thought ev’ry evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow (REFRAIN)

Now the daylight flees now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head
Curtain torn in two dead are raised to life
Finished the vict’ry cry (REFRAIN)

Oh to see my name written in the wounds
For through Your suff’ring I am free
Death is crushed to death life is mine to live
Won through Your selfless love

This the pow’r of the cross
Son of God slain for us
What a love what a cost
We stand forgiven at the cross

This the pow’r of the cross
Son of God slain for us
What a love what a cost
We stand forgiven at the cross

Benediction

MINISTER: Go love your God;
PEOPLE: Go love your neighbor.

Maundy Thursday Missions Offering

Lent is the 40-day season leading up to Easter when believers have traditionally sacrificed something in their personal lives in order to honor the greatest sacrifice ever made by Jesus on the cross. This year, we are asking you to consider giving up the purchase of an experience or a material possession in order to give the funds from this sacrifice to the Maundy Thursday Missions Offering.

All contributions to this offering go to special requests that the Missions Committee receives from our missionaries and ministries, in order to help them above and beyond the missions budget. For example, the Mission Committee could distribute funds from this offering to college students going on summer missions, middle school kids going to Young Life Camp, Food for the Hungry staff in Nicaragua, or to our partner churches across the world.

There are two ways to give to the Maundy Thursday Missions Offering:

     - Online at tcpca.org/give, any time between today and Maundy Thursday.

     - In-person at the Maundy Thursday service on April 1.

Thank you for considering this special way to give to missions at TCPC.

Join the Welcome Team!

Each Sunday, you probably have noticed smiling faces welcoming you at the door, handing out bulletins, and helping you find your seat before each worship service. These men and women are part of our Welcome Team. We are looking for more men and women to help greet people at the door and seat people as they enter the sanctuary. If you want to help TCPC become the warmest place on earth on Sunday mornings, please email Brooke Blackwell at bblackwell@tcpca.org.
